Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a global not-for-profit organisation and the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world. BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in, and better for the sector's future.
What makes Better Cotton different?
Unlike certified organic cotton, Better Cotton is a mass-balance system — meaning BCI cotton is sourced from trained farmers but is not physically separated from conventional cotton through the supply chain. This allows for a more affordable, scalable entry point into sustainable cotton sourcing.
BCI Farmer Training
BCI trains farmers in three key areas: reducing water usage, minimising harmful pesticide and fertiliser use, and improving soil health. Over 2.9 million farmers across 23 countries participate in the programme.
